Dear Sir:

Your favor of the 2nd inst. has been received. Thanks for the promptness of your reply.

My reason for writing you was simply this: A certain person, unknown to me, represented the Col. in a very bad light. I was unwilling to entertain the report without further assurance, which your note provides.

I have never met the person, to my knowledge but I have learned since writing you that he is very well known here, and is looked upon precisely as you represent him.
