Gen. Stewart Van Vliet

My dear Sir:

Permit me to introduce to your favorable consideration my son Willard Young, who is about to enter the Academy at West Point. He is young and inexperienced in society, his surroundings in the Academy will be for a time entirely new to him -- and he may need a friendly head and hand to aid him. I have thought, dear General, that I might rely on your kind and valuable assistance in the boy's behalf, feeling assured that you will find <him> neither ungrateful nor unworthy. Any service rendered, or courtesy extended to him will be esteemed an act of personal friendship.

Joseph A. Young, my eldest son accompanies him to New York, with whom you are accquainted.

Yours with respect
Brigham Young
