Isaac M. Singer Esq.

Sir,

Though you are a total stranger to me personally, you are not so by report, and I take the liberty of writing you a few lines, having been informed that you were accquainted, more or less intimately with the prophet Joseph Smith.

If it would not be intruding too much upon you, would you be kind enough to inform me at what period you were acquainted with him, and of the extent of that accquaintance?

In compiling the Church History, we have endeavoured to gain information from every available quarter relative to the life of the prophet from his earliest years, and by this means have obtained much valuable information which might otherwise have been lost.

It affords me pleasure to inform you that your son is well settled in a good business in this City. He is operating in direct connexion with "Zion's Co-operative Mercantile Institution." the largest commercial house in this Territory, having branches in every city, town and village in it. He is engaged in the sale of your machine, which is very highly spoken of by all who use it, so far as I can learn; and it is fair to suppose, that, by close and careful attention to business, Mr. Singer will meet with considerable success. He bears a good character, is very steady in his habits and thorough in business and already has made many friends.

If in the tide of travel now flowing across the continent you should ever come this way I would be pleased to have you call and see me.

Hoping to hear from you soon.
I remain, Yours very respectfully.

Brigham Young
