Rev. Hiram McKee,
Arcata, Humboldt Co., Cal.

Dear Brother,

When your letter to Prest. Young arrived he had gone to Soda Springs, accompanied by Elders Geo. A. Smith; Joseph Young; Wilford Woodruff; B. Young Jr. & others, expecting to return about the 24th. I shall take pleasure in reading it to him on his return & in the mean time, let me assure you, that you are held in honorable remembrance here by all who had an opportunity of making your accquaintance, or hearing you speak, so far as my observation extends.

We received a paper about the same time, containing your letter from Salt Lake which I clipped out & sent to the Prest. with a synopsis of your letter I also read it to a portion of his family, who expressed themselves pleased to hear from you, & I learned from Sister Lucy D. Young who had charge of your room that you did not leave your memorandum book there.

With regard to the "dis-interested big tent meetings," charity seems to prompt me to draw the veil over their proceedings, & merely remark that the Prest. visited them twice & stayed through the entire proceedings each day, though they lacked the courtesy to invite him to the stand Their congregations were almost entirely composed of Mormons, who were advised to attend. I am not aware that they made one single bona fide convert, and so far as I can learn the whole affair was pre-eminently a fizzle.

The weather here is excessively warm, the thermometer being from 100° to 103° in the open air, well shaded and free from reflection.

May peace attend your labors, and success crown your efforts to do good with all the faithful.

Your brother,

D. McKenzie
Sec. Prest. B. Young
