Mr. Edward Young

My dear Brother,

Yours of the 18th May was duly received, but got mislaid while I was absent from home, and was only recently read to me. About the same time your additional favor of Augt. 12th came to hand, from which we were sorry to hear of your ill health, although we sincerely hope that by this time you have recovered, and are in the enjoyment of your customary vigour.

In your former letter you state your intention of sending me a box containing some sugar, salts, and other things marked to Joseph A. Young. I have not received such a box and cannot learn anything about it. If you ever shipped it, I would like you to send a description of it, also the date of shipment, how it was marked &c. so that we can trace it, also how & where shipped.

Since your last visit here I have travelled a good deal through the Territory in the company with the brethren. We spent some of the summer in the northern part of the Territory, quite a portion of the time at Soda Springs. This is a delightful resort during the hot summer, and will become a very popular one when it is known to travellers and prepared for their reception.

I have been quite unwell the past 7 or 8 days, but I feel thankful to be able to state that I am now much recovered. So far as I know the folks are all about as usual. Last Tuesday my daughter Mary departed this life, after giving birth to a child, she was the wife of Mark Croxall

The season has been unusually dry, and water scarce, still we have raised very fair crops.

It is a very busy time with us, there is a great amount of work to be done and not any too many to do it. The City is rapidly building up, some very fine buildings have been erected lately and others are in process of erection.

Our "Utah Southern Railroad" still progresses, trains are running to a point about 16 miles south of this city and grading goes on quite rapidly.

The "Utah Northern Railroad Company" recently organized, engaged in building a narrow guage road north from near Ogden through the Settlements in Cache Co. and eventually reaching Soda Springs. John W. Young is the Prest. and Supt. of this company and is actively engaged upon the work.

Many thanks for your kind offer of the wine . If you send it I think you had best mark it B. Y. in the corner, and address H. B. Clawson, S. L. City by express.

With regard to what you could get to do here, that would very much depend upon your strength and ability. There is an abundance of work to be done, for all who are able to do it.

Brother Joseph has just stepped into the Office and joins me in very best wishes, also in expressing the hope that the time is not far distant when you will come and take up your permanent abode with us.

I would like to have you exercise great care in selecting and packing the blackberries, none should be picked that are not ripe, and they should be packed so as not to bruise.

Be sure you send your bills for the sugar, salts, &c. and the wine and the blackberries, and inform me at what house you would like the draft drawn up.

As I intend starting for St. George immediately after Conference, where we intend building a temple this winter, I would be pleased to hear from you as soon as possible.

Remember me to all friends and accept for yourself my best wishes and brotherly love. Your Brother

Brigham Young
