Peter Van Schaack, Esqr.
Chicago.

Dear Sir,

I received to day per H. B. Clawson, Esqr. a "memento" which you have done me the honor to present me, and for which I respectfully tender you my thanks; as well as for the very cordial expression of your good feelings towards our people.

We were deeply pained by the terrible catastrophe that recently befell your great city, though, we trust that the energy characteristic of Chicagoans, backed by the practicable sympathy of the civilized world, and prompt and vigorous action on the part of your citizens will soon resurrect her.

Yours with respect
Brigham Young
