Sir:--

In reply to yours of the 9th inst directed to Brigham Young Esq. asking the return of $210.70 which it is averred was paid "to his representative" (D McK") by a mistake, I beg leave to say that you are in error about "D McK" as it was paid to me by the U. C. R. R. Co Oct 20. 1870 but upon the receipt by the U. C. R. R. Co of a letter from you dated Oct 26. 1870 they claimed it back from me and I paid it to them, and they duly credited it to the U.P. R. R. Co as advised by you in said letter of which the following is a copy which was furnished me by their Secretary to day: "Omaha Neb. Oct. 26. 1870. Joseph A. Young Esq Supt. U. C. R. R. Co Salt Lake City Dear Sir:-- The correct amount of Emigration a/c is as agreed with Mr Staines $19.117.80: the amount upon our books was $19.328.50 being an overcharge of $210.70 a voucher (of $210.70) for this difference was made simply to correct our books, but through some mistake the voucher got into the hands of our Cashier who has paid the amount through agent at Echo. Please credit amount $210.70 to our acct as being erroneously paid and advise us of the same.

Yours truly
