Hon. George H. Williams.
Atty. Genl. U.S.
Washington, D.C.

Sir,

Feeling a deep interest in the affairs of Utah, having been one of its pioneers, you will excuse my offering a suggestion.

Hon. John F. Kinney, several years Chief justice of Iowa, and for two terms Chief justice of Utah, an honorable and an upright judge, universally respected as a sound jurist while here, resides in Nebraska, he is thoroughly schooled in Federal and Territorial laws; and, should the administration see proper to appoint him Chief justice of Utah, I am safe to affirm,--judging from the past -- that they will have no occasion to blush at his judicial decisions, which would undoubtedly reflect credit upon the Government and be highly satisfactory to the people. To my certain knowledge -- from long accquaintance -- he possesses unquestioned integrity & ability for such a position.

Very respectfully,
Geo. A. Smith
