Engineer Office, Washington, D.C.

Dear Sir,

Yours of the 7th inst. was received to-day. Your former communication requesting that our transit be sent to you for repairs, was also received.

Prest. Young instructed me at that time to write to you stating that he was not in favor of shipping the instrument because of its great delicacy, and he believed that it could be repaired here, if, after your personal inspection you found it necessary. I ought to have written this sooner, but owing to the multiplicity of business it had slipped my attention.

Yours with respect
D. McKenzie Sec.
