Dear Sir,

This will introduce to you Lieut. Richard L. Hoxie of the corps of engineers connected with the U.S. Exploration under the direction of Lieut. George M. Wheeler; the former gentleman is desirous of obtaining a guide for his party through the country south and west to Sevier Lake.

I have recommended you, as being, in my judgment, a proper person to act in that capacity, and would be pleased to have you, (business permitting) engage with the expedition and render all the aid in your power.
