Mr. Edward Young.
Clintonville, Winepacca Co. Wis.

My dear Brother,

I received your favor of Sept. 30th as also a former letter containing a notice of your having shipped me a box of sundry herbs and roots with the receipt for the expressage paid. The box came safely to hand, for which I tender you my sincere thanks.

I was pleased to hear that you were well, and that your family was also well; excepting your wife, her sickness which you remark has continued more or less for one year, is matter of regret and calls for sympathy, as it is a great drawback to a man to have the head of the domestic household unable to see to matters, which she is best fitted to attend to.

I hope the way will soon open up so that you can sell out and join your relatives here, it would be a gratification to all of us.

My health continues excellent, for which I feel very thankful, as also the general health of my family.

There is no news of stirring interest in our mountain region, peace continues to prevail, notwithstanding the malice of our enemies, who feel proportionately elated as the news from the east seems to indicate the success of Grant in the approaching election; they mean us harm, but we know in whom we trust and if we are only faithful we feel assured all will be well.

We had an excellent Conference and it was very largely attended. The Agricultural and Manufacturing Society held their annual fair this month, and the exhibition of home productions was highly creditable.

Prest. George A. Smith has gone east intending to sail from New York on the 6th Nov. on a tour to Europe and Asia Minor including the Holy Land. He will be accompanied by some ten elders from this place.

In the morning I intend to start for Provo to attend two days meeting. Business steadily increases and my time is fully occupied.

John W. Young is still in the east. I have not heard from him directly for three weeks, but I learn from Joseph A. that he is expected home shortly.

We are having a long spell of warm, dry, weather, crops of every kind, excepting corn perhaps have been very abundant this year, which with the great demand for labor in the mines, freighting &c. the people, generally are full of business.

Bro Phineas was in at conference, his health is good, though he had been rather poorly -- Joseph is feeble but able to be around, he goes with us to Provo to morrow. Lorenzo is well and lively, and desires to be kindly remembered.

Peace be with you, and yours,

Your Affecionate Brother

Brigham Young

P.S. The Prest. started this morning without signing this, but as he dictated it in the main, I take the liberty of forwarding it.
