Mr. Wm. Gather.

Dear Sir:

Yours of June 9. to Prest. Brigham Young has been received. He instructed me to acknowledge the receipt of it, and to state that he is not prepared to assure you of a situation should you come here; you would have to take your chances, as others do.

In Utah, there are men of good education, skilled in the arts and sciences, who are engaged in pursuits other than they would prefer to follow, but ours is a new country, and we have to accomodate ourselves to circumstances.

Whether you would be willing to do as others do in this particular, of course he is not prepared to say, but thinks your talents and accquirements ought to recommend you anywhere.

Yours with respect

D. McKenzie.
Secy.
