Dear Bro:--

The missionaries for England 15 in number, expect to start on the 20th. inst. excepting Elder Joseph F. Smith, who will not be able to get away until after the close of the Legislative Assembly. We instructed them to report at Liverpool so that you may select those necessary to fill vacancies, and the rest must shift for themselves, and not look to the mission for their support We wish them to strike out and break new ground and support themselves.

Elder John Squires of this City received a draft on you yesterday for £30. which we would like paid to him. In a conversation with Bro. Squires I advised him to go into his former neighbourhood and open a Barber Shop; by that means he would be able to make a shilling, instead of spending one, interest will be awakened and opportunities will open up for preaching, and at the same time he will be measurably independent as to means of subsistence. We mention this as a sample of how we think many of the elders might be able to
manage without burdening the poor saints with their support.

Conference adjourned on the 8th inst. We had a very excellent time, a good spirit prevailed, and the attendance was large throughout.

Incidents frequently occur in the travels of the Elders abroad that would be found very interesting to read. The Editor of the Deseret News is anxious to receive communications from them, with a view to publishing such as are of that character. You may see proper to insert such a notice in the Millennial Star.

We start to morrow morning at 7. with some of the First Presidency and some of the Twelve to hold two days meeting at Provo. We go by rail to Battle Creek. The New County Court House at Provo will be dedicated during our visit.

Joseph F. Smith will preside in England when he arrives.

Love to all. Your Bro. in the Gospel.
