Title

1873 November 15 Letter to Bishop A. J. Moffit

Description

Labor tithing credits should be applied strictly; many individuals still owe significant amounts. Paying other tithes does not replace labor or hay tithing.

Dear Brother

Referring to your letter addressed to Bishop Edward Hunter on the subject ofapplying the labor tithing due to sundry persons in Manti for going to the Frontiers after the Poor. I desire to state that the counsel always has been and is today that the Credits for that service should be applied solely on labor tithing If you will put down 50 cts. per day for every tenth day from the time those brethren came to the valley to the last year of our Immigration by Teams from the Mo. river, you will find that after subtracting the little labor tithing they have paid -- they are still owing a large amount. Then if you will base your calculation on $1.50 per day -- the usual price allowed common laborers on labor tithing -- you will find that the 2400 dollars will all be absorbed and a large sum still due the Tithing office

Many Farmers, Stock raisers and others are in the habit of ignoring labor & Hay tithes averring that if they pay the tenth of their land products & increase on stock they owe no Labor or Hay tithing. This is wrong and no doubt in many instances only a subterfuge to evade the payment of such legitimate tithes

If the brethren will promptly pay their tithing we will have ample wherewith to build Temples and to carry on the general work of extending salvation to the living and the dead
