Mr. Alvin Janes,
159. Alexander St. Rochester, N. Y.

Dear Sir:

Yours of the 10th inst. has been received, and I was pleased to hear from you.

John W. is not my eldest, but my third son, the eldest is Joseph A, and the second is Brigham. John W. is at this writing in New York, but we expect him to return shortly.

It is interesting to hear of old accquaintances and places after so long an absence, and the very mention of them recalls recollections not unpleasant to dwell upon.

I would like to inquire after your father's family, to learn what has become of them, and where they are, and what they are doing, particularly your eldest brother, whose name I have forgotten.

It is 25 years since I have been east of Utah Territory and very many changes transpire inm a quarter of a century particularly in so fast an age as the one in which we live.

Whether I shall ever return is something I am not prepared to say. I am now in my 73rd year, and my business keeps me constantly employed, leaving me little time, even were I so disposed, to travel outside this Territory.

We are building up quite a country, our settlements extend some 700 miles north and south, numbering nigh to 200 Cities, towns & villages, and we are extending and building up and increasing fast as our circumstances and the blessings of our Heavenly Father enables us. so to do.

I would be pleased to hear from you again, when it comes convenient, and should you or any of our mutual friends ever come this way, I would be pleased to have you make me a call.

Yours with respect
Brigham Young
