The last California Mail brought me a letter <from> you dated July 30th, requiring me to hunt up a Mule you said [?] you have lost, and two men and Richardson and

In reply I have to inform you that I knew nothing about said Mule or men; and you know my exceedingly varied business & duties entirely prevent my looking up such matters, and I will suggest that if you wish, to pursue your inquiry for your Mule, that you write to Mssrs Livingston & Kinkead or some merchant or Lawyer residing here, who may interest themselves in the case, for pay for the trouble they may be at
