We understand that your Ward has much land suited to the successful culture of Hemp and flax. It is very desirable that as a people we take immediate steps to render ourselves as independent as possible of all importations. Hemp and flax enter largely into the web and woof of a actual necessities and we have a number of good citizens to work them up into as good shape as elsewhere. It is now seasonable to mature our plans for another year's operations in this direction, at least so far as selecting good locations and practical hemp and flax farmers for this new industry.

 

Realizing your anxiety, as well as my own, to carry out the very reasonable and consistent wishes of our President, who has so long urged the necessity of establishing every possible necessary home industry so as to become self-sustaining and reliant. I pen these lines to you on this important subject, believing that you will do your best to further the object of this note.

 

If we can obtain the books we hope to, we will collate such data immediately, being upon the culture and curing of these fibers, and publish it in the Deseret News for the benefit of all who may interest themselves in raising these very necessary staples.
