Your letter to my son Joseph A. of April 8th/54 was received yesterday, and has been handed to me by his wife,-- Joseph having gone to England on a mission to preach the gospel.

In reply to your enquiries none of the machines you refer to have been introduced here, tho many have talked about making or importing them. The mowing machine for cutting and not binding would not in my opinion prove profitable in this place, but the drilling machine for sowing grain, and the grain reaper ought in my opinion to be introduced, and would be done, to advantage to the farmer, and profit to the importer, and should therefore recommend you to bring over a number.

Your uncle Phinehas H. Young and family are all well and doing well, and business generally in the valley is prosperous.
