Artemus Millet (1790-1874)
11 Sept. 1790–19 Nov. 1874. Farmer, lumberman, merchant, builder, stonemason. Born at Westmoreland, Cheshire Co., New Hampshire. Son of Ebenezer Millet and Catherine Dryden. Moved to Stockbridge, Windsor Co., Vermont, fall 1800; to Shelburn, Chittendon Co., Vermont, 1809; and to Louisville, St. Lawrence Co., New York, 1810. Returned to Stockbridge, 1811. Married first Ruth Grannis of Milton, Chittenden Co., 17 May 1815. Moved near Plattsburg, Clinton Co., New York, 1815. Moved to Volney, Oswego Co., New York, fall 1816. Member of Methodist church. Moved to Long Island, Queens Co., New York, 1822. Moved to Ernestown (later in Lennox and Addington Co., Ontario), Upper Canada, 1824. Married second Susanna Peters, 15 Jan. 1832, in Ernestown. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Brigham Young and confirmed by Joseph Young, Jan. 1833, at Loughborough, Frontenac Co., Midland District (later in Ontario), Upper Canada. In Oct. 1833, moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, where he supervised construction of temple. Ordained an elder and served mission to Highland Co., Ohio, 1836. Stockholder in Kirtland Safety Society. Moved back to Upper Canada, ca. 1837; returned to Ohio, 1841. Returned to body of church in Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, Apr. 1843. Married third Catherine Almira Prichard Oaks, 20 Apr. 1843. Ordained a high priest by Noah Packard, 8 Oct. 1844, in Nauvoo. Left Nauvoo, summer 1846. Married fourth Triphenia Booth, Oct. 1847, in Iowa. Married fifth Nancy Lemaster, 11 Mar. 1849, in Kanesville (later Council Bluffs), Pottawattamie Co., Iowa. Moved to northern Missouri, 1849. Migrated to Utah Territory, Oct. 1850. Arrived at Manti, Sanpete Co., Utah Territory, to serve colonizing mission, 18 Nov. 1850. Appointed president of Manti high council, 30 Apr. 1851. Served colonizing missions to various locations in present-day southern Utah and Nevada. Died at Scipio, Millard Co., Utah Territory.
