Henry Garlick Sherwood (1785-1867)
20 Apr. 1785–24 Nov. 1867. Surveyor. Born at Kingsbury, Washington Co., New York. Son of Newcomb Sherwood and a woman whose maiden name was Tolman (first name unidentified). Married first Jane J. McManagal (McMangle) of Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland, ca. 1824. Lived at Bolton, Warren Co., New York, 1830. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, by Aug. 1832. Ordained an elder by Jared and Simeon Carter, Aug. 1832. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, ca. 1834. Appointed to Kirtland high council, by 17 Aug. 1835. Married second Marcia Abbott of Windham Co., Vermont, ca. 1835. Served mission to Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee, 1836. Stockholder in Kirtland Safety Society. Migrated to Missouri; located at De Witt, Carroll Co., and then Daviess Co., 1838. Member of committee at Far West, Caldwell Co., Missouri, to supervise removal of Latter-day Saints from Missouri, Apr. 1839. Expelled from Missouri and located at Commerce (later Nauvoo), Hancock Co., Illinois, 1839. Appointed member of Nauvoo high council, 5 Oct. 1839. Appointed by Nauvoo high council to supervise sale of town lots in Commerce, 21 Oct. 1839. Instructed in Joseph Smith revelation to buy stock for building Nauvoo House, 19 Jan. 1841. Nauvoo city marshal, 1841–1843. Appointed guard in Nauvoo Legion, Mar. 1841. Member of Nauvoo Masonic Lodge. Member of Brigham Young pioneer company to Salt Lake Valley, 1847. Served colonizing mission to San Bernardino, Los Angeles Co., California, 1852. Returned to Utah Territory, 1855. Became disaffected with church and removed from high priests quorum, 27 Feb. 1856. Returned to San Bernardino, where he died.
