Bishop Andrew H. Scott,
Provo.

Dear Brother,

I have received a letter from Mrs. Mary M. Patterson, a School Teacher in your Ward, in which she expresses her anxiety to sustain herself by her own exertions in School teaching; but which she says she cannot do at the rates the parents of your Ward wish to pay her. She says that you say that she ought to have a bushel of wheat per quarter for each scholar; but that the people are not willing to give her that much. I think that this amount is little enough under the circumstances, and ought to be paid, or its equivalent, cheerfully, that those who are desirous of living by the proceeds of their own labor may be able to do so, and the Ward be relieved from the necessity of supporting such.

I remain Your Brother,

Brigham Young

P. S. She ought to be paid a bushel and a half per quarter for each scholar.
