President's Office,
Great Salt Lake City,
January 7th, 1865.

To my brethren, the Merchants of this City:

Dear Brethren,

I wish to negotiate with you or borrow from you the sum of Fifty Thousand dollars ($50,000) in money and goods, for the purpose of forwarding the construction of the Deseret Irrigation and Navigation Canal. We wish to have this work completed, as far as the Little Cottonwood, as soon as possible, so that we will have it in our power to have our rock brought by its waters to this City for the Temple next Summer. In my capacity as Trustee-inTrust, I have donated Fifty Thousand dollars ($50,000) towards this Canal, having in view, in so doing, the benefits which will accrue in the erection of this Building and other public and private buildings.

If I obtain this means from you, I will repay you as soon as the funds of the Church will permit.

An early reply to this will oblige

Your Brother,

Brigham Young
